Meet The Beetles! Biological Control of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Part 10
Learn about the successful introduction of Laricobius nigrinus--the hemlock woolly adelgid predator beetle in Western North Carolina--and its role as a biological control for HWA (hemlock woolly adelgid). @livingwebfarms
Landowners, landscapers, farmers, forest stewards, gardeners, and naturalists, join us for this exciting event culminating years of work and research by Dr. McBug (entomologist Dr. Richard McDonald) and his team working on the introduction and propagation of the Laricobius nigrinus predator beetle and its role in protecting our hemlocks.
Dr. McBug and agents from Watauga, Ashe, and Avery County Cooperative Extension presented their findings and recommendations at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center for a hands-on and classroom workshop including:
- Introductions & overview of HWA (hemlock woolly adelgid)/past conditions/history lessons, HWA in the landscape (Dr. Richard McDonald)
- "Meet the beetles Outdoors" How to sample for beetles 'show and tell'.
Beetle biology, life cycle, prevalence in the landscape, role in HWA control. (Dr. Richard McDonald)
- "Meet the beetles Indoors" Using a microscope & UV light to check for presence (Dr. Richard McDonald)
- Laricobius survey results from Watauga County (Blake Williams, Ashe County Cooperative Extension)
- Treatment options: Biological vs. Chemical (Lear Powell, Arborist; Jerry Moody, Avery County Cooperative Extension; Dr. Jim Hamilton, Watauga County Cooperative Extension)
- Considerations for hemlocks with adelgid and dealing with elongate hemlock scale (Lear Powell, Arborist; Jerry Moody, Avery County Cooperative Extension; Dr. Jim Hamilton, Watauga County Cooperative Extension)
- Q&A session
After our time in the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center, we go out in the field to visit Grandfather Golf & Country Club where we meet award-winning superintendent Pete Gerdon, who has collaborated with Dr. McDonald to introduce the predator beetles to stop the adelgid hemlock problem they were having. Now, the ecosystem there is a stellar example of how restoration and recovery can occur when nature is helped get back in balance. In part 10, Dr. Jim Hamilton of the Watauga County Cooperative Extension begins by talking about the formerly thriving hemlock nursery industry in the area before the infestation of woolly adelgid and how he now recommends planting them again.

This results in a massive decline in fertility and structure, changes in salinit...

25:45 Barrel Size I use a 2/3rds section of a nitrogen "K" cylinder utilizing a 3" round vertical burn chamber within, fired with propane gas. The 3" x quare tubing exhaust travels a labyrinthine pathway through a small sand & cement bench in my bedroom, attached with a 4-bolt flange, terminating in an 18-feet-tall flu to a rain-proof termination cap. I installed a swing door on the flu to allow a candle to be placed on a wire rack inside the flu to act as a "flow primer". It takes about 2 hours to heat up, then I shut off the single burner, toss a pillow against the inlet, effectively spoiling any draft and sleep with the gas off. The warmed bench keeps my 15' x 15' room toasty warm all night.

Thank you for sharing your experience. However, ... Such a shame to hear an anti-scientific method mini-speech.. - "The scientists say that there is no evidence for X, but really it's just too complicated for them.." GRASP THIS: If no scientifically valid, (eg. Controlled variable) trials have been conducted, then it is 100% TRUE that there is no scientific evidence. This does not mean (it does not follow) that X is not true/does not work - it just means what it says, that there is not YET that scientific evidence. - NO PROOF does not equal NO TRUTH - it just means.. no proof. There is no need to get all butt-hurt & anti-scientific, just because you are told that there is not (yet) scientific evidence to match your experiential conclusions. - An essential part of any valid, controlled experiment is the managing of variables. - An essential element of valid evidence is repeatability. - Will your solution work for another market gardener? - If your success does not repeat for the next person, would you know what to change, to make it work again? - Was the plant variety different (how specific was your identification?) - Was the soil type different (how specific was your identification?) - Was the history of the soil different (how specific was your identification?) - Was the equipment different (how specific was your identification?) - Etc., etc. - Was it ever your intention, through your building of experience, to achieve the level of specificity (variables), to produce solid evidence for use by others (repeatability)? - If it works for the next person, will you honestly be able to say that you understand why it also worked for him/her? NOTE: More variables = Larger/more complicated experiment = More time & expense. GRASP THIS: - If you hand someone a bag of apples, and they note that there are no oranges, you may consider the comment irrelevant - but it is still TRUE. - If you are working at learning from simple, hard-won experience, and someone notes that your method does not yield scientifically valid results, you may consider the comment irrelevant - but it is still TRUE. Science is essentially methodology. Choosing different methods, eg. Simple, hard-won experience - Fine, work with what you have. Denigrating science & scientists just because your conclusions are not always validated - You're choosing idiocy & bigotry. If you want to justifiably denigrate science, earn it - show that the scientific method is invalid. No? Then grow up, and keep any bitchy butt-hurt to yourself, instead of spreading it around..

What most people don't consider is they are looking to produce water that is hot enough to shower in or wash clothes. The truth is if you are willing to accept only partially heated water you can get enormous benefits by just raising the water temperature from the incoming temperature to as much as is attainable and then using a conventional water heater take it the rest of the way. Newton's Law of Heating and Cooling is a linear equation. Every degree raised by the sun is one less degree by fuel and you will get a proportional cost savings

Since corn comes from Native Americans, maybe we should take a page out of their book. For example, Hopi corn is planted at a depth of 18 inches, yes you heard that right. It is not irrigated. By the way, the Hopi lands receive about 6” of rain. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
